SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama matched a career-high with eight 3-pointers, scoring 39 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Boston Celtics 125-116 on Tuesday night, completing a sweep of the two-game season series. De’Aaron Fox contributed 25 points, while Stephon Castle added 18 in San Antonio’s fifth consecutive victory. For Boston, Derrick White led with 34 points, and Jayson Tatum scored 24 points in his third game since returning from a ruptured right Achilles tendon sustained on May 12. Tatum’s fourth and final 3-pointer narrowed the Celtics’ deficit to 118-113 with 1:43 remaining. However, Castle responded with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later to secure the Spurs’ win. The matchup between the No. 2 teams from each conference was intense and physical. Boston All-Star Jaylen Brown was ejected after receiving two technical fouls within seconds following a disputed out-of-bounds call with 3:42 remaining in the first half. Brown had to be restrained by teammates after the first technical, and a second technical issued by official Suyash Mehta resulted in his automatic ejection.
Wembanyama also left the court in the first half after being struck in the face during a play involving Sam Hauser. He was hit in the nose, eye, and forehead, briefly leaving the game but returned at the start of the second quarter. Despite the injury scare, Wembanyama shot 8-for-15 from 3-point range and 11-for-20 overall, marking the 34th time in his three-year career that he scored 30 or more points. Boston struggled from long range, making 19 of 51 3-point attempts after opening the game 9-for-17.
Next Games:Boston will face Oklahoma City on Thursday night, while San Antonio hosts Milwaukee on Tuesday.
